Love art? Aged 15 - 24?
Ever wondered how art exhibitions are organised?
Oriel Davies Gallery Young Curators Group meets weekly and sessions will run till December 2010. If you are aged between 15 and 24 you can get directly involved with exhibition organisation. The programme is free. You do not have to be studying art and you do not have to be in education to join. All we ask is that you are enthusiastic and prepared to give up some of your spare time.
The programme runs with sessions held at the gallery outside school/college hours. Sessions include trips to other galleries and artists studios. The Young Curators is about teamwork and exploring a range of different skills. The Group will work with the project officer and gallery staff and explore:
How ideas for art exhibitions are generated
The different kinds of exhibitions that galleries put on
The planning process
How to research artists and artworks
Selection - deciding which artworks/ artists will show in an exhibition
Working with contemporary artists and other curators
Practical things borrowing artworks; getting the work to and from the gallery; making sure it is insured; making sure it is handled and displayed properly (conservation)
Installation and display exhibition design, layout, lighting
How to engage visitors in an exhibition/artwork - interpretation & education
Related events previews/openings, education workshops & events
Encouraging people to come and see the exhibition marketing & publicity, audience development
How we can learn from the project - evaluation & feedback
