Project Evaluator Brief - Open Space

Oriel Davies is looking for a critical friend with specific expertise in evaluating arts and community projects. This is an opportunity for a first-rate consultant to evaluate Open Space, a two year pilot project that runs alongside, and in addition to, the Gallery's existing exhibition and learning programmes.

The project commenced in March 2016 and will conclude at the end of January 2017. Open Space is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

The aim of Open Space is - to develop the Gallery's existing artistic and learning programmes by exploring new models of working that encourage a broader spectrum of creative inputs/outputs and collaborations, coupled with participation and interaction with new and existing audiences and partners.

The Drawing Room was the first edition of the project, which ran From 22 October 2016 to the 25 February 2017. A multi-use space - an artist studio, stage set, newsroom... A place for ideas, where discussion, learning, creativity and play were encouraged. A space for hanging out and entertaining friends – Newtown’s living room in an art gallery.

Through open calls, conversations and invitations - residents, schools, voluntary groups, established and emerging artists took part and contributed to the ever-changing environment.

The second edition, The Kitchen, has built on the achievements in year one. A pop-up project and event space, open to visitors from 07 October 2017 to 27 January 2018, presenting a vibrant programme of workshops, activities, events and talks alongside fantastic opportunities for collaboration and encouraging community intervention.

The Kitchen is a room to relax and hang out in as well as a space for creativity. Designed as a flexible environment for a wide range of activity, The Kitchen continuously adapts and changes as visitors, artists and community groups create and share their work.

Evaluating the Project

We require an evaluation report that evidences the impact and tells the Open Space story by highlighting case studies; capturing data and feedback and drawing on quantitative as well as qualitative evidence to record and measure outputs / outcomes.

The Project Evaluator will be supported by the Project Co-ordinator and build on the data and feedback already gathered through audience, participant, artist and group evaluation forms.

The detailed evaluation report will:

  • Include, an executive summary; an introduction with contextual information; a description of the methodology for collecting data; key findings; conclusions and recommendations for future projects.
  • Assess whether the project outcomes have been met
  • Pulls together the key data and findings from completed audience, artist and participant evaluation forms.
  • Assess the project’s reach and impact
