Creative Commission Opportunity - Where the Severn Smiles Project

Where the Severn Smiles is a project devised by Open Newtown, a community owned independent development trust, and funded by Welsh Government, to encourage residents and visitors to connect to and care for the green spaces in the town for the benefit of their own wellbeing and the community as a whole. As a partner in the project Oriel Davies is promoting wellbeing and mindfulness through a series of creative activities for all ages and abilities devised and delivered by artists from Wales and beyond.

We are calling out for proposals for either an online workshop or an activity pack. The online workshop will require the artist to make a video of the workshop activity which can be uploaded onto the gallery’s You Tube channel.  The activity pack must be suitable for downloading at home or for printing in-house at the gallery for distribution through the gallery shop or by post.

The commissions should explore nature in the parkland and River Severn adjacent to the gallery encouraging interaction, enquiry and creative response. We work closely with project partners Open Newtown, Cultivate and Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and would like proposals to tie in with part of one of these organisation’s programmes.

 For information on each organisation see links at the end of this page. Our forthcoming exhibition Our Isles is a celebration of rural skills and crafts. We would like the commission to make reference to this by connecting the project to the context of the show in some way.

 The fee for each commission is £750 (based on £250 per day);

a £100 material budget and up to £100 travel budget for the selected artists to visit the gallery and green spaces specified if wished.

 Artists are asked to complete the application form including a short proposal for the commission (can in be written or video format)

 Please email Kate Morgan-Clare for an application form kate@orieldavies.org

The deadline for the application is September 24th. The selected artist will be announced on September 28th.

The commission will need to be completed by October 26th.  For further details please contact kate@orieldavies.org
