Dreamy, dark collages of found family snapshots, home movies, and a wealth of mysterious symbols overlaid with hand-drawn animation characterise this new work by Christopher Webster van Tonder.
After years of making photographic prints using a variety of alternative methods, Webster van Tonder has recently experimented with stop-motion animation - scratching and painting directly onto 16mm film footage. His imagery draws on research into the use of photography in South Africa and Germany from 1936-45.
