Oriel Davies Writing Competition Event 2018 Winners

Writers from across Wales and beyond packed out Oriel Davies’ education space on Saturday 24th February, to share and celebrate original writing on the theme of ‘Water’. The event was  hosted by the Oriel Davies Creative Writing Competition 2017 judges, prizewinning Newtown poet Chris Kinsey and Young People’s Laureate Wales, Sophie McKeand.

Live readings of their own competition entries were presented by sixteen of the Highly Commended and prizewinning writers, with contemporary poetry and prose that was by turns evocative, witty and humorous.

The top prize for prose was awarded to Menna Siwan, for Swimming Lessons, a moving and poetic meditation on love, memory and the poignancy of its loss. Nicky Hetherington gained the poetry prize for ‘Water’, described by Chris Kinsey as ‘a fresh perspective on water as a metaphor for different states of being’.
