Oriel Open 2014: People's Choice Prizewinner Announced

Hannah Downing, Vertical Panorama: Oak Tree

People’s Choice Prizewinner Announced!

Oriel Davies Open 2014

Visitors to this year’s hugely successful Oriel Davies Open exhibition have voted for their favourite work out of a possible whopping seventy-five pieces on display.

The pencil drawing Vertical Panorama: Oak Tree by Swansea-based artist Hannah Downing caught people’s imagination due to its sheer scale and amazing attention to detail. The work, spanning over two metres, portrayed a breathtaking, photorealist representation of an oak tree as we stand under its great branches. All the nooks, crannies and crags of its bark surface laid out in minute detail, all sketched by hand in pencil.

When hearing she had won Hannah responded; "I’m surprised and extremely grateful to be awarded the People’s Choice Prize – thanks to everyone who voted! When working alone in a studio it’s often difficult to gauge whether a piece of work will connect with an audience, sometimes it does and other times it doesn’t, so it’s a nice feeling for the work to be acknowledged in this way."

Hannah graduated in 2008 with a BA in Fine Art from Swansea Metropolitan University and has since exhibited in shows across the UK. Vertical Panorama is the title given to an ongoing body of work which consists of attempts to explore unusual or extended views whilst holding on to the formalistic markers of realistic representation. There is no set subject matter beyond the act of looking itself, and the process of attempting to express or give shape to that personal subjective experience.
